Faustin Guetigo was a 27 year old man who died after being shot by law enforcement officers on April 10, 2021, in Rockford, Illinois. The incident followed a series of domestic disturbance calls that led deputies from the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office to his home and ultimately ended in a fatal confrontation.
Earlier that day, Guetigo’s wife contacted authorities and reported a domestic violence situation. She told officers that she had been assaulted and choked during an argument. Deputies investigated the report and determined there was probable cause to arrest Guetigo on domestic battery charges. However, he was not taken into custody at that time because he was no longer at the residence.
Several hours later, his wife called police again and reported that Guetigo had returned home. Deputies responded to the residence with the intention of arresting him. When officers arrived and attempted to take him into custody, Guetigo resisted their efforts and retreated into the house. Deputies followed him inside, where the situation quickly escalated.
According to the official investigation, Guetigo went to the basement area of the home and armed himself with a metal pipe. Deputies gave repeated verbal commands for him to drop the object and surrender. Instead of complying, authorities said he advanced toward the officers. During the confrontation, Guetigo struck one of the deputies with the pipe, hitting the officer in the head and hand with significant force. The deputy was knocked unconscious and suffered serious injuries.
As the situation unfolded rapidly and another deputy was still facing what investigators described as an immediate threat, multiple shots were fired. Guetigo was struck several times. Officers at the scene provided emergency medical assistance until paramedics arrived. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The injured deputy was also taken for medical treatment and later recovered. Following the incident, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office placed the involved deputies on administrative leave, which is standard procedure after a police shooting. The case was reviewed by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney and the Illinois State Police.
Body camera footage, 911 recordings, and physical evidence were examined as part of the investigation. In August 2021, prosecutors announced that no criminal charges would be filed against the deputies involved. The State’s Attorney concluded that the use of deadly force was legally justified because Guetigo posed a serious and immediate threat to the officers after allegedly striking one deputy unconscious with a metal object.
The release of body camera footage and investigative findings brought public attention to the case and raised broader discussions about police use of force, domestic violence response procedures, and officer safety during volatile situations inside private homes.
